Doggerland is the first performance for Crucial Theatre. The choice of performance for the company lies not in form or genre but in necessity and excitement.
Here is our manifesto:
"Performance is not optional.
It is not a choice.
It is bold, innate and crucial to healthy human experience.
It is political.
It is part of us.
It is inseparable from us.
It thrives in Childhood when it is at its most imaginative and free. Childhood without performance is an oxymoron.
And so it continues.
Adulthood starved of the experience of performance starves our humanity.
Though inseparable history and state have sought to separate it from human existence; to bury, suffocate and keep performance at a distance, embed it within hierarchies of art, artists, ‘outsiders’ ‘others’. Or have it rigidly controlled, de-compartmentalised, separate.
Outside the circle of necessity.
Why?
We believe it is because the potential for performance is revolutionary and threatening; two words that shake the value system of state to its core.
Crucial theatre aims to awaken this necessity in both its performers and its audience through shared stories that communicate, galvanize, question and take steps (however small) to re-establish the crucial experience of performance.
Step by step.
